The Golden Age of Dirigibles

AIM Alinari Image Museum
Dirigibili – Airships. I Transatlantici del cielo

Exhibition
Trieste, Italy (May. 2018)

Until September 23, 2018, the prestigious AIM Alinari Image Museum in Trieste hosted the extraordinary exhibition “Dirigibili – Airships. The Transatlantic Ships of the Sky”, a unique project promoted by Fratelli Alinari – Foundation for the History of Photography, Hun in the Sun, and MBVision. The exhibition, curated by Max Pinucci, was based on his acclaimed book Airships | Dirigibili, enriched with an introduction by Bruce Dickinson, the famous frontman of Iron Maiden and aviation enthusiast.

Set up in the evocative halls of the Bastione Fiorito at the Castello di San Giusto, the exhibition evoked the epic story of the airships, the giants of the sky that, long before the advent of the airplane, made the human dream of traveling among the clouds possible.

Hun in the Sun, along with Pinucci’s team, contributed to making the exhibition an immersive and multidimensional experience, thanks to an exhibition path that combined art, technology, and history.

The exhibition included:

  • Vintage photographs from the Alinari archives and prestigious international institutions such as the Library of Congress, the National Library of Norway, and the Naval History and Heritage Command.
  • Original plates and illustrations from the book “Airships | Dirigibili,” presented in large format with extraordinary details.
  • Scale models, from the smallest (1:720) to the largest (1:200), displayed in 3D dioramas to represent the aircraft in action.
  • Authentic memorabilia, such as instruments, clothing, photo albums, and vintage stamps.

A highlight of the exhibition was the rich multimedia journey, which allowed visitors to explore the internal structures of the airships through 360° immersive headsets and delve into the historical charm through:

  • Vintage stereoscopes and holographic films.
  • Digital reconstructions of the passenger rooms of the legendary LZ 129 Hindenburg, the largest airship ever built.
  • 3D cinema, to relive the historical and technical feats of airships.

The exhibition was a unique journey through technology, design, and history, aimed at celebrating airships not only as extraordinary technical achievements but also as symbols of the human dream to conquer the skies.
