On Friday, September 1, 2023, at 5:00 PM, the evocative Ex Cavallerizza in Piazzale Verdi, Lucca, hosted the inauguration of the celebratory exhibition for the Centenary of the Italian Air Force. The event, part of a broad calendar of national initiatives launched in Rome on March 28 and spanning twenty Italian cities, paid tribute to the extraordinary history of aviation with a focus on the protagonists and locations tied to the Lucca area.
The exhibition featured valuable artifacts from the Museo del Risorgimento collection, such as the flight suit and overpants of the renowned Atlantic aviator Carlo Del Prete, and a book with a handwritten dedication by Gabriele D’Annunzio to “Gioioso di gioia” Giovanbattista Pittaluga.
Alongside these artifacts, twelve panels narrated the local history of aviation, featuring legendary pilots like Carlo Del Prete and Uberto Bonetti, an aerofuturist painter, as well as iconic locations such as the Tassignano airport and the Torre del Lago seaplane base.
Hun in the Sun contributed to the event with the interior setup and the creation of video projections that brought the Ex Cavallerizza spaces to life, immersing visitors in the history and beauty of aviation. Additionally, the Airships: Designed for Greatness book and board game were exhibited, along with the brand-new S.55 Wings Over the Atlantic, projects that continue to passionately and uniquely recount the epic of flight.
The event was an opportunity to celebrate the innovation and bravery that have marked a century of achievements in Italian skies.
